The short answer: For new single-coin products, Jan van Eck thinks so. On The Pomp Podcast, the VanEck CEO said the days of "more crypto ETFs are basically over" and that VanEck is now pushing active management instead. He thinks the foundational blockchains and the exchanges will survive, is unsure about others, and sees the bigger change in Wall Street moving to 24/7 trading behind the scenes.
Drawing on The Pomp Podcast, hosted by Anthony Pompliano (anthonypompliano.com), with guest Jan van Eck, CEO of VanEck (episode released November 5, 2026).
VanEck was one of the most aggressive issuers of crypto funds. When Pomp asked about altcoin funds, Jan said the firm is changing course. Here is what he said, and how VanEck's U.S. and European products differ.
Is the crypto ETF boom over?
Jan said VanEck has "13 crypto ETFs in Europe" and got aggressive there before U.S. regulators allowed similar products. Now, he said, the days of "more crypto ETFs are basically over." One clarification: VanEck's European crypto products are technically exchange-traded notes (ETNs), not U.S.-registered ETFs. VanEck ETP AG's August 2026 base prospectus lists 15 crypto ETNs, from bitcoin and ether to Solana, Sui and Hyperliquid. In the U.S., VanEck runs the VanEck Bitcoin ETF (HODL), a spot bitcoin fund that launched in January 2024.
Why is VanEck pushing actively managed crypto funds?
"What we have been pushing is active management," Jan said. His reasoning is that most financial advisers can't judge one blockchain against another, such as Avalanche versus Ethereum, so they would rather have a professional manager or an index make those calls. His advice for everyone else was to go with an index or an actively managed fund.
Which cryptocurrencies does Jan van Eck think will survive?
Two categories. "The foundational ones will survive, I think. And then the exchanges, I think will survive," he said, meaning the main layer-1 blockchains and exchange-linked tokens. He was less sure about specific names: "I don't know if Hyperliquid survives," he said, and noted BNB is not a perfect play on Binance. These are his opinions. Is Wall Street moving to 24/7 trading?
Jan thinks it is, mostly out of sight. He said leading firms such as Franklin Templeton and Fidelity are "changing the back end of Wall Street towards a 24-7 environment." He cited Franklin and Uber. In a pilot announced October 30, 2026, Uber used HSBC tokenized deposits to buy Franklin Templeton tokenized money market fund shares and redeemed some of them over a weekend, which normal market hours don't allow.
He also pointed to resistance from incumbents such as CME. CME sued the regulator in June 2026 over its approval of crypto perpetual futures, and the case is ongoing, according to CoinDesk. Related: What Is Kalshi?
