  • Harvey is a legal AI company that builds AI tools and agents for law firms, in-house legal teams and professional services firms.

A note on the name: this page is about Harvey, the legal AI company at harvey.ai.

What is Harvey?

Harvey started as what it called a "copilot for lawyers," according to TechCrunch, which covered its launch in November 2022. Lawyers describe a task in plain English, such as researching a question or reviewing a clause, and Harvey produces the work for the lawyer to review.

Today Harvey says it wants to help legal teams "build and own their intelligence at scale." It says 80% of Am Law 100 law firms use it, along with in-house legal teams at five of the Fortune 10, per its September 2026 funding announcement.

What does Harvey do?

  • Legal research and drafting. From the start, Harvey has let lawyers ask legal questions and get drafts in natural language, per TechCrunch.

  • Legal agents. Harvey's research describes agents that handle long, multi-step legal work such as M&A due diligence, high-volume document review and searching a firm's past work, per its Harvey Tenet post.

  • Its own AI model. In August 2026 Harvey introduced Harvey Tenet, "our first post-trained open-weight model," built on a Kimi K3 base model and trained with Fireworks for long-horizon legal work. Harvey calls it a research preview.

  • Benchmarks. Harvey created LAB, the Legal Agent Benchmark, an open-source set of more than 1,200 legal agent tasks across 24 practice areas.

  • Acquisitions. The ABA Journal reports Harvey acquired AI security platform Guardrails AI in September 2026, which Harvey said was its fourth acquisition of the year.

Who founded Harvey?

Harvey was founded by Winston Weinberg, a former securities and antitrust litigator at the law firm O'Melveny & Myers, and Gabriel (Gabe) Pereyra, previously a research scientist at DeepMind, Google Brain and Meta AI, according to TechCrunch. The two were roommates. Pereyra showed Weinberg OpenAI's GPT-3, and Weinberg saw how it could improve legal work.

How much funding has Harvey raised?

  • 2022: Harvey emerged from stealth with $5 million led by the OpenAI Startup Fund, per TechCrunch.

  • September 2026: Harvey raised $550 million at a $15.5 billion valuation, co-led by Diffusion and Lightspeed Venture Partners, per Harvey. Sapphire Ventures and Whale Rock joined as new investors. Existing investors including Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, a16z, Coatue, Conviction, Elad Gil, GIC and Goldman Sachs Alternatives also participated.

Will Harvey replace lawyers?

Harvey has framed itself as a tool for lawyers, not a replacement. At launch, Pereyra told TechCrunch that "Harvey will make lawyers more efficient," and the product carried a disclaimer that it should be used under the supervision of licensed attorneys. On The Pomp Podcast, Jordi Visser made a similar point (see below).

Why does Harvey matter?

  • A test case for AI in professional services. Law is built on billable hours and document-heavy work, which makes it one of the clearest places to watch AI change a profession.

  • Owning the model. Harvey's move to post-train an open-weight model is part of a wider shift of companies building their own AI rather than relying only on the big labs. Harvey says its post-trained models can match or beat frontier models on some legal tasks at lower cost.

  • Scale. Harvey's valuation reached $15.5 billion in September 2026, per the company.

What did The Pomp Podcast say about Harvey?

Harvey came up most on the October 24, 2026 episode with Jordi Visser, "Will Bitcoin Survive Quantum Computing?". Jordi told a story about a friend who went back to law school and said the school was largely ignoring tools like Harvey. Quotes below are from the episodes, with timestamps.

❝

"so how is school, you know what Harvey is?"

Jordi Visser, recounting his question to a friend in law school, The Pomp Podcast, Oct 24, 2026, 24:26

Jordi said the friend described a prominent New York law school where students cannot bring phones or laptops into class. Later in the conversation he argued lawyers should embrace the technology:

❝

"If you're a lawyer, you want to embrace using Harvey because Harvey can't replace all lawyers, but it can certainly speed up the process of being a great lawyer."

Jordi Visser, The Pomp Podcast, Oct 24, 2026, 28:01

On the October 17 episode, Pomp pointed to Harvey as an example of companies that are fine-tuning open-source models instead of relying only on the big AI labs:

❝

"Harvey comes out and says it."

Anthony Pompliano, The Pomp Podcast, Oct 17, 2026, 36:50

That lines up with Harvey's August 2026 research post, which says the company has focused on "building frontier legal intelligence using open-weight models."
